Save Our Stones
Newport’s burying grounds and graveyards reflect the city’s diverse and significant history. The stones stand as monuments to the buried people and reflect the artistry of the stone carvers who fashioned them.
Unfortunately, many of these historic stones have been lost or damaged beyond repair due to weather or human activity.
Fortunately, surviving "at risk" stones can be saved!
The city of Newport is conducting a comprehensive conservation program, but it is expensive. With your help the job can be undertaken one stone at a time
Please consider making a contribution to conserve our historic gravestones!
Here's what your contribution can permit us to do:
$1500 will fund the conservation of our most historic slate stones.
$1000 funds the repair and cleaning of broken marble stones.
$500 pays for resetting granite stones in their base.
$250 covers the cost of cleaning headstones
$100 helps fund supplies and work to conserve gravestones.
If you would like to contribute to this effort, please send a check made out to the City of Newport, Finance Dept., City Hall, 43 Broadway, Newport, RI, 02840.
Please write that the donation is for gravestone conservation.
Questions about the project should be sent to Scott Wheeler: (401) 845-5802 or swheeler@CityofNewport.com
